Laparobot

[New robotic application in trenchless technology for pipeline rehabilitation work – Laparobot]

Before applying the trenchless technology for rehabilitation work (Pipe Insertion or Compact Pipe Technology) to replace the old ductile iron (DI) pipe, it is necessary to remove the obstacle in the old metallic pipe. However, one frequently encountered obstacle is the Syphon, which is a device installed in the DI pipe network to collect accumulated water. The dip pipe for removing water away from the Syphon can hinder the pipe insertion process and thus has to be removed. However, the Syphon is generally installed deep underground in order to facilitate its function. Removing the dip pipe of the Syphon becomes a great challenge as a large and deep trench is usually required using traditional method. Also, due to traffic and environmental restrictions in Hong Kong, road opening at some area where the Syphon is installed may be time-restricted or even prohibited.

Laparobot, a robotic system developed by Towngas, has proven to enhance the rehabilitation by providing higher flexibility, better control and shorter operation time. In addition, the trenchless technology brought about by using the Laparobot can reduce the impact to the environment compared to open trench method, hence making the rehabilitation work more environmentally friendly.
